SHORT IELTS LECTURE FOR YOU
IELTS ESSAY
When writing an essay in IELTS you will need to write up to 5 paragraphs. You will be asked to write an essay of at least 250 words. You will not be told whether it is argumentative or expository essay. An argumentative essay is a written debate. Here you write in support of or against a statement.
An example is:
A successful man is one who has earned a lot of money. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Any question that asks for your opinion is all about argumentative essay.
To start this essay you will need to write a topic sentence also known as thesis statement. A topic sentence is the first and most important statement in your essay. It contains a paraphrase that declares your stand. It does not make a paragraph. What I mean is that after this first sentence you don't need to go to a new paragraph to continue your essay. Just continue immediately after the statement. After writing this statement you will need to give up to five reasons why you agree with the statement or why you disagree. Each reason should be on a paragraph of its own.
An example of a topic sentence for the above essay is:
Success is not defined by the amount of money a man has because life is not all about money but satisfaction and joy derived from one's labour as this is what truly makes life worth living.
